Henry Landes is founder and president of the Delaware Valley Family Business Center which has served over 700 business families since 1988. A former contributing editor of Family Business Magazine, Henry and his clients are often featured in this leading international publication. He is also a frequent speaker to family businesses and advisors of family firms.
Building on his deep experience with business families, Henry developed The Lasting Legacy Process™ – a family-friendly inter-generational learning and team-building process – which provides the direction, confidence and tools to address the “natural complexities” and dangers faced by business families of all sizes, industries and generations. Henry and his team of associates help business families speak the truth in love about the real issues and work effectively together in building the Key Teams of a Lasting Legacy: robust family councils, aligned shareholders, high-performing executive teams as well as boards that provide a much-needed but rare commodity in business families -- accountability for management as well as the shareholders/family.
While engagements are custom designed for each business family, they often include leading delicate discussions between shareholders, “rising shareholders” and family members, boards and executives; always testing, clarifying, refreshing expectations and defining appropriate boundaries within and between the individuals and the Key Teams of a Lasting Legacy. Preparing business families for generations of success requires disciplined attention and regular discussions to forge family policies/shareholder commitments which speak with “one voice” to provide incredible competitive advantage for the business as well as maximum harmony within the family. Engagements may include Board Development and Assessment, Shareholder Education, Mediation, Next-Generation Assessments, Mentoring/Peer Groups, Strategic Planning, and Executive Coaching as well as high collaboration with other advisors of the family and the business.
Henry’s passionate interest in family business education led to the founding of the Delaware Valley Family Business Learning Community, a powerful peer-driven forum of more than 90 family firm members in the Greater Philadelphia/tri-state region. Members learn best practices from each other, authors and professional advisors through large conferences, topical seminars, peer-groups as well as phone conferences and web-based venues.
Growing up in a successful family business, currently owned by the 4th generation and moving to 5th, gives him a first-hand appreciation for the special challenges facing business families. Henry received his Master’s degree from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and is a member of the Family Firm Institute, the National Association of Corporate Directors, and the Association for Conflict Resolution. He is a founding member of the Kaleo Network of Family Business Advisors, a group of premier family business advisors who learn and collaborate together in service to family business systems.
Henry and his wife and business partner, Jane, have two children and three truly exceptional grandchildren.
